Sacramento Suburban Water District Honored With National WaterSense® Excellence in Education and Outreach Award

Las Vegas, Nevada—The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today honored Sacramento Suburban Water District (SSWD) with a national 2018 WaterSense Excellence in Education and Outreach Award for its creative approach to educating customers about using water efficiently in 2017 and supporting WaterSense.

SSWD General Manager Dan York accepted the award during a lunchtime event at the WaterSmart Innovations Conference in Las Vegas.

“Receiving such a prestigious award is truly an honor,” York said. “We’re pleased to be promoting WaterSense products in our outreach—WaterSense products deliver savings every time they are used and provide an important foundation for building sustained water savings over the long-term.” 

SSWD was honored for making the promotion of WaterSense and water efficiency a primary initiative of its outreach program in 2017. For example, SSWD promoted WaterSense’s Fix a Leak Week and Sprinkler Spruce-Up programs through full-page ads in local newspapers, geo-targeted ads on social media, articles pitched to local publications, monthly bill inserts, billing envelopes and more.

In addition, SSWD partnered with a local park district to develop and launch a new series of water-wise demonstration landscapes to inspire the public. The grand opening event featured a ribbon cutting ceremony, presentations by local officials, and a display of water-efficient irrigation systems including WaterSense-labeled weather-based irrigation controllers.

Since 2006, WaterSense labeled products have helped consumers save more than 2.7 trillion gallons of water, or more than the amount used by all U.S. households for nearly 100 days. In addition to water savings, WaterSense products and homes have helped reduce the amount of energy needed to heat, pump, and treat water by 367 billion kilowatt hours—which is enough to power more than 34.1 million homes for a year—and save $63.8 billion in water and energy bills.

“Through innovation and commitment, our partners are helping to transform the marketplace for water-efficient, high-performing products and homes,” said Veronica Blette, WaterSense program manager. “The WaterSense Sustained Excellence, Partner of the Year, and Excellence Award winners are leading the charge to save water, energy, and money for future generations.”
