Committed to You—COVID-19 Update from SSWD General Manager Dan York

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact our lives in unprecedented ways, I am writing to assure you that Sacramento Suburban Water District (SSWD) will continue providing reliable water and service to our customers, while also keeping employees safe and doing our part to reduce the virus’ spread.

First and foremost: Your drinking water is safe. Both the World Health Organization (WHO) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated that the COVID-19 virus has not been detected in drinking water, and current water treatment methods should be effective in killing coronaviruses in drinking water supplies. Treatments include filtration and chlorination, which are used by SSWD and known to remove or inactivate the COVID-19 virus. In addition, groundwater is not a source of COVID-19 and also undergoes chlorine treatment.

Your drinking water is reliable. We are dedicated to ensuring your water continues to flow every time you turn on the tap. We do not expect this outbreak to disrupt water supplies. Therefore, there is no need to stockpile bottled water. SSWD maintains an extensive network of groundwater wells, treatment facilities, pumps, and pipelines to deliver safe and reliable water supplies. This system provides several redundancies and allows us to move water when and where it’s needed to serve our customers, even during emergencies.

We are also working to protect our customers, community, and employees. In order to take measures to slow the transmission of COVID-19, we’ve closed our in-person customer service office and moved to assisting our customers through phone and email communication. Our employees are also telecommuting (where possible) and staggering shifts so that we can maintain operational continuity and create social distancing among staff.

We know this is a very uncertain time for everyone. We also deeply understand that we are providing a service that is essential to our community’s health and safety. We are dedicated to this task and will do everything in our power to maintain water supplies during this pandemic.

Please feel free to contact our customer services team at 916.972.7171 should you have any questions. Below are some additional resources for you.
