Antelope WEL Garden Featured on "California's Water" with Huell Howser
Huell Howser visited SSWD's Antelope WEL Garden to tape a portion of the "Water Efficient Gardns in Full Bloom" segment. With him in this video clip are SSWD's very own Linda Higgings, Water Conservation Coordinator and Candace Schuncke, master gardener.
Antelope WEL Gardens
SSWD's Water Efficient Landscape (WEL) garden is located at the District’s Antelope
Reservoir. It is a botanical oasis filled with a variety of colors and
textures. It might surprise you that most of these beautiful plants are water efficient. The two-acre
garden was established in 1998 and contains numerous species of both native and drought-tolerant
plants.
The garden offers many great ideas for your own landscape plantings, plus innovative
irrigation systems to reduce water use and wasteful run off. There’s even a weather station,
designed to collect data and program the irrigation system so it automatically responds to changing
weather conditions. Please contact Michelle Hirt at 916.679.2891 to schedule time at Antelope
Gardens.
Garden Tours
School and community groups, clubs, and individuals visit our Antelope Gardens. Educational
kiosks are packed with information about water conserving landscape design. Plants are
identified by name, and species so you can go directly to your garden center with a comprehensive plant list.
Facility Rental for Special Events
The entire two-acre facility can be rented for private use for weddings, receptions, renuions, corporate retreats or public meetings. There is a food and beverage area, restrooms and a beautiful shady patio area.
